Following success in New York, Hollywood and London, the concept of interactive street theatre has made its debut in Sydney with Sydney Interactive Theatre’s inaugural production, The Messenger, running from early December has already hosted over 300 very happy audience members with loads more booked in for 2013.

Sydney Interactive Theatre was started by two 23 year old local Sydney mates Daniel Harris and Curtis Oakes.  After experiencing some Off-Broadway shows in New York, Daniel caught grasp of the concept of interactive theatre in the city streets. Coupled with the ambition to start a business he joined forces with close friend, actor and aspiring director Curtis Oakes. Over a few beers the two developed out the concept and developed “The Messenger”.

Part game, part theatre, part tour and part bar crawl, The Messenger sees professional actors deliver a thrilling narrative through Sydney's historic The Rocks area, providing a unique experience previously unheard of in Sydney.

The new exciting format is gaining momentum featuring in Grazia magazine, Timeout Sydney and Alternative Media. SIT has quickly raced into the top 40 activities to do in Sydney after consistent 5 star feedback from audience members. The majority of which have been Sydneysiders looking for something new to do as Katie from Sydney reviewed “Even though I have lived in Sydney my entire life, it was great wondering around the Rocks area and even discovering some new places. The story line and the actors were fantastic and our group of unknown people just clicked. We had lots of laughs throughout the afternoon and enjoyed the challenge….”

Taking elements from Sydney’s 1920’s gangster era and New York Italian Mafia scene, The Messenger follows the story of lovers Donnie and Rose who are on the run from the mob. The audience, aided by clues found in city locations including bars, wharves, back alleys and iconic landmarks, embark on a treacherous mission, interacting with shady and quirky characters along the way.

Sydney Interactive Theatre co-founder Daniel Harris said the engaging storyline and interplay between the cast and audience will keep participants thoroughly entertained throughout the performance.

"If you want to experience something truly unique in Sydney that is fun, exciting, spontaneous and very social, then The Messenger is a must do."

The interactive theatre experience also includes a couple of bar stops where participants can mingle with their fellow sleuths and work out their next steps, with food and drinks are all included in the ticket price. The mix of theatre, crime, spontaneity, pub drinks and socializing seems to be hitting the mark. Another Trip Advisor reviewer making the following statement, “...The acting is very good, the plot is thorough and accessible and there's plenty of clue solving to get your detective skills going. Even better, there's a couple of drinks at excellent pubs thrown in, meaning that it turns into a very sociable and interactive event! Highly recommended.”
