Fiji flooding update

Wednesday, 25 January 2012

This page will be updated as more news comes to hand.

Popular tourist resorts in Denarau will operate as normal as possible, according to Tourism Fiji, despite heavy rain and flooding affecting Fiji’s main island.

A statement from the bureau read that Fiji is expecting heavy rain through to Thursday and low lying areas of Viti Levu and all major rivers in Nadi will continue to experience severe flooding.

Flooding has also forced the temporary closure of roads in Nadi as well as the main road between Denarua Island and Nadi International Airport.

With flights arriving and departing as usual, the bureau said guests currently staying at the resorts are being “well cared for” and travellers are side-stepping the flooded main road and are being ferried from Port Denarua to Naisoso resort to continue on to the international airport.

Meanwhile the Group said flights to other islands have been suspended due to the bad weather and helicopter charters are being used to pick up visitors between the Coral Coast and Nadi International Airport.

Concerns for passenger safety, Captain Cook Cruises said it has cancelled day cruises but will continue to operate four-night cruise programs.

For any further cancellations, Tourism Fiji has urged travellers to contact their resort or airline but stressed it would continue to monitor the situation and issue further advisories.
